From a land down under....

If you didn't already know - we are all in Australia now. Actually we've been here for five weeks. However things are far from settled or normal. Darin is working in Melbourne and Jake and I are spending some great time catching up with my family in Brisbane. We are currently looking for a place to live in Melbourne in the inner northern suburbs....and are not having much luck yet. It's a lot tougher than I imagined with 10 to 20 people turning up to every inspection - lots of competition. I feel like it shouldn't be this hard to find a place to live...

Jake with our boxes in Japan before they were sent

Anyway apart from that Jake and I have been enjoying baby chinos and lots of good coffee at outdoor cafes, lots of parks, art galleries, museums, beaches and other lots of fun stuff. We made the right decision to move, but I'll feel a whole lot better once we have a semi-permanent place to rest our heads, so if you know anyone with a place to rent or sublet in Melbourne, please let me know.

Our boxes arrive from Japan soon which means I'll have all of my craft supplies and that is very exciting. Am hoping that I'll be a lot more productive now that I'm not working (for now at least). I do hope to keep blogging but I'm sure it'll be a little intermittent for a while. We are all good though so I just wanted to let you know!!

15 goofy months to 17 goofier months

Jake you are 17 months old today! This will be my last update from Japan which seems quite unbelievable. I've been a bit slack with updating, but am making an effort to write down my memories tonight because I want to remember them forever.

So 15 months didn't start off too well for you and your father actually. You were both very sick with the stomach flu on the very same day. I can only imagine how bad you felt - at its peak you and I sat on the red couch ALL DAY LONG watching Baby Einstein, Sesame Street and many other tv shows over and over again with short intervals for puking and napping. Anyone that knows you will understand that you never really just sit around. I felt so bad for both of you.

15months1

A common theme over the past couple of months has been climbing into boxes and buckets. It's quite adorable unless you get stuck or fall out of the said container and unfortunately those things happen a little bit too often. You are getting braver and more and more adventurous which means more and more near heart attacks for your mama and papa.

Other adorable new developments include you walking around with your eyes shut! Not sure what this is about, but it is cute. There is also a lot of spinning around and around until you fall over. You now kiss on demand (when you feel like it) and nothing warms my heart more than your wet wide open mouth planting one on my lips when I leave for work in the morning.

Eyesclosed

Just like when you got your first six teeth all at once, when you turned 15 months old your next six teeth - two bottom front teeth and four molars all came in at once and this played havoc with your sleep but to be honest my sweet, your night sleep has never been that awesome. You still wake up quite a bit but since I work I secretly enjoy those nightly cuddles (as long as I don't have to wake up too much).

Cheek-a-licious

One really exciting adventure was your discovery of snow for the first time. You weren't totally stoked at first. You were very wary of that white cold stuff, but after some time playing in the snow and feeling it in your bare hands and riding on a sled you seemed to be having a lot more fun. Your first snow experience was in Hirosaki while we were visiting my host family.

We spent a lot of mornings at Starbucks and the park and lucky for us it is always full of great doggies. This is Maria and you loved her. Over the past couple of months your animal sounds have increased - my personal favourite is your cat and your dad taught you the gorilla which is pretty amazing.

We have also been hesitant to let you play with balloons up until now because let's just say you've got a bit of a heavy hand. We relented one day.....and you ended up going through four balloons in one day. Everytime one bust you looked around completely perplexed for about 20 secs and then burst into tears. The 'be gentle' lesson is still continuing.

The absolute biggest change this month is the end of daddy daycare. Your daddy scored a great job in Melbourne Australia and had to move there a few weeks ahead of us. We are so proud of him and I am amazed at the fantastic job he has done over the past year with you. As your daddy always says 'I stand by the product' and you Jake, are an amazing product of you and your father.

So Jake we are moving to Melbourne Australia and even though you may not remember anything from this time, I hope that one day you can read this and understand just how special this time was for our family. Your mother and father met in Japan, got married in Japan, and you came into our lives here in Japan. We will bring you back to this special place in the future so you can eat sukiyaki, soak in outdoor hotsprings and wander around Harajuku, but for now we are saying goodbye to Japan and hello to our new life in Australia. Both your father and I are very excited to share this special new adventure with you - our little vigilante!!

Another five things....

So I'm behind on my things I'll miss about Japan list.

Here are another five things that I'll miss:

* AWESOME shopping, but I'll especially miss my fav store HANJIRO (every trip there puts a smile on my face)

* Having a convenience store located within 100 metres of absolutely any location in Tokyo - thereby allowing us to buy beer at anytime

* Drinking beer ANYWHERE (trains, parks, walking home, etc)

* Hanami where beer drinking is highly encouraged....oh yeah and the cherry blossoms look really cool too.

* The best craft stores in the world and in particular our local: YUZAWAYA.

FIVE things I won't miss:

* The unavailability of low-fat products!! ha!

* Our ridiculously small kitchen...

* Renewing our visas every three years

* the fact that Japanese people DON'T do breakfast you know like Sunday morning breakfasts at cafes

* Japanese dentists

From North to South

We are in the middle of an international move - it's stressful people! According to my diary I have 25 days left in Japan after nearly seven years. That's a long time. I was sure we were only going to stay here for a couple of years at the beginning, but one thing led to another and here we are. We've been talking about moving for a very long time, but we've finally got the ball rolling. Plane tickets are booked and furniture is leaving our house everyday. I have mixed feelings about the move, but I'm super excited (and also somewhat scared) about all of these upcoming changes. We are shifting hemispheres from North to South and will be making our new home in Melbourne Australia. So please come and visit once we are all set up!

I'm behind on my Jake updates and I'm sorry for that - mostly because he's changing daily and I love to read all of my old updates and I know that if you don't write these things down you forget....There are so many adorable things that J does now and I don't want to forget... except maybe his new habit of slamming things (including himself) into doors and walls (he slammed his wooden walker into one of our doors yesterday and made a dent - goodbye deposit!!).

So in honour of our move, I'm going to try to post one thing I'll miss about Japan and one more thing that I won't miss about Japan everyday until we leave.

Number ONE thing that I will miss about Japan:

FOOD

...in particular all of our favourite restaurants in Kichijoji including chains such as Ootoya!! My running joke about my next job has been to open Ootoya Melbourne - it would be such a hit, I'm sure!

Kurozu

Number ONE thing I won't miss about Japan:

crowded morning trains

Educational tv for kids in Japan

So NHK does a pretty bang up job with the educational kids tv in Japan. We like it and we like that Jake watches it. I would like to think exposing him to tv in a different language does good things to his brain development. I do have a couple of problems with it though. My first is that I can't get the songs out of my head and the other is that I hate the 'Eigo de Asobo' - LET'S PLAY in ENGLISH' segment. It is unnatural and just teaches kids a bunch of lies like how your shadow can catch you and that 'car' is a 'door' word.

One of the most unusual segments is during 'Karada de Asobo' - Let's play with our bodies!' (which is just WEIRD when translated into English. It's a segment called - Odoru Naizo - which means 'dancing internal organs'. They seriously have a man that dresses up and dances around as an internal organ. Check it out for yourself.

this guy is a spleen

Darin's favourite segment is called 'Pythagoras Switch' that showcases a different Rube Goldberg machine everyday among other things. They are amazing. Here are a couple of examples:

And here's that lying song about how your shadow can catch you when you fall:

And last but not least here is a song from Inai inai baa (another NHK kids show aimed at 1 to 2 year old kids) called Guru guru dokkan - Jake and I sing this pretty much everyday and he's started to raise his arms to do the dokkan part - it's pretty adorable. If I fork out and buy a new camera (which I will have to since our other one has not turned up) I'll try to capture that cuteness on video.

It might be quiet around here for a while...

because we've misplaced our camera. I don't want to say lost because that's too sad to contemplate. It was really bad timing too since I lost it the day after my little brother arrived from London for a week. I totally can't even remember what we did on that day so it's hard to retrace my steps. Personally I'm convinced it's in our tiny apartment....somewhere!! I hadn't seen Chris in 2.5 years (way too long)... I did take a few photos with my phone though.

He arrived on my birthday - best present ever!

Jake loved having a person other than us to rough house with - Jake officially loves rough housing! A boy to the bone. Um please ignore our less than tidy bedroom!!

I discovered an interestingly named bar while he was here. I didn't go in though. Um pee...gross!

Photo-0361

Jake was a trooper as we dragged him all around Tokyo - my shoulders/upper back got sore from all of that back carry time.

We were super sad to see Uncle Chris go back to London. He's the best! Yay for little brothers (and big brothers) and Uncles!!
